The competition for playing time among goalkeepers at Arsenal is about to heat up.

The Gunners are close to completing a deal to sign Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United for an initial fee of £24 million, according to David Ornstein and James McNicholas of The Athletic.

The agreement could reportedly be worth a further £6 million in potential add-ons.

Ramsdale has reportedly agreed to a four-year contract that includes an option to extend his stay for an additional year. The deal is subject to the England international completing a medical, Ornstein and McNicholas report.

The 23-year-old was Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta's top goalkeeping target heading into the summer. A deal had appeared unlikely due to Sheffield United's unwillingness to budge from their £40-million valuation, but the Blades re-engaged Arsenal last week with amended demands, note Ornstein and McNicholas.

Ramsdale was not included in Sheffield United's squad for Wednesday's Championship encounter against West Bromwich Albion, a potential indication that an official announcement is near.

Ramsdale's arrival in north London is bound to spark a competition for minutes with Arsenal's current No. 1, Bernd Leno.

While Ramsdale is likely to begin his Gunners tenure as a backup for Leno, the reported fee for his services suggests Arsenal view Ramsdale as the German international's eventual successor.

Arsenal are also reportedly trying to finalize a deal to sign midfielder Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid for £29.7 million (€35 million).
