New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman appears set on building his own version of the Golden State Warriors.

With the non-waiver trade deadline less than three weeks away, the Yankees have made a strong offer to the Baltimore Orioles for slugger Manny Machado, sources told Jon Heyman of Fancred.

The Yankees emerged as legitimate contenders for Machado in recent days and have the pieces necessary to swing a deal for the four-time All-Star. It's been reported that the Orioles are seeking pitching help in return, and are asking that top Yankees pitching prospect Justus Sheffield be included in the deal. However, MASN's Roch Kubatko reports that the Yankees have excluded Sheffield from their offer.

Machado put on a show against the Yankees on Tuesday, going 3-for-4 with two home runs in an Orioles win. He's hitting .314/.385/.574 with 23 home runs, 20 doubles, and 63 RBIs in his final year under contract before hitting free agency.

Acquiring Machado would result in a shakeup in New York's infield. He's been adamant he wants to remain at shortstop, though the Yankees would likely deploy him at third base. That would either move rookie Miguel Andujar to the bench or minor leagues, though Cashman could dangle the 23-year-old in trade talks for a starting pitcher.

The Yankees entered play Wednesday 3 1/2 games back of the Red Sox in the division.
