Tempers flared in the San Diego Padres' dugout while the Friars played the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Saturday.

Star infielders Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado exchanged some harsh words in the visitor's dugout, with Machado loudly yelling at Tatis. Teammates needed to separate the two before they eventually took their respective positions on the field.

The incident took place shortly after Tatis struck out looking in the fifth inning, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee.

Manager Jayce Tingler praised Machado's leadership but wouldn't discuss specifics of the matter after the game.

The Padres have struggled mightily in the second half after lofty expectations coming into the season. The club's slide continued on Saturday when the Cardinals came back in the eighth inning to grab a 3-2 win, dropping San Diego 2 1/2 games back of the final wild-card spot.
