Cubs name Carter Hawkins new GM
Hawkins becomes the 16th GM in franchise history after being poached from the Cleveland Indians, where he spent 14 seasons and most recently served as assistant GM.
"I am thrilled to bring Carter into our organization," Hoyer said in a statement. "He has earned a fantastic reputation as a leader through hard work, open-mindedness, humility, and intelligence. I enjoyed getting to know him throughout the interview process, and it quickly became clear that we share the same passion for team building. I look forward to partnering with him to build the next great Cubs team."
Chicago will formally introduce Hawkins during a press conference Monday at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs have undergone transformative changes to their roster over the past few months. Chicago began making moves as Theo Epstein stepped down as president of baseball operations, resulting in Hoyer's promotion from GM. Hoyer, who helped assemble the 2016 World Series club, then parted with multiple members of the championship roster, including Kyle Schwarber, Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, and Javier Baez.
