Report: Leonard expected to miss remainder of postseason

It's likely we've seen the last of Kawhi Leonard on the San Antonio Spurs ... at least for this season.

The superstar small forward is expected to miss the remainder of the postseason as he continues to recover from a right quadriceps injury, league sources told Yahoo Sports' Shams Charania.

Leonard has been limited to only nine games this season after saying early last month he hoped to return "soon." He'd been cleared to play by San Antonio's medical staff, but head coach Gregg Popovich made it clear his franchise player wouldn't return to the active lineup until permitted by his own medical team. With the NBA playoffs now underway, that still hasn't happened. The shorthanded Spurs fell 113-92 to the Golden State Warriors on Saturday in Game 1.

Leonard has made recent strides in his rehabilitation in New York but has shifted his focus from returning to the court this year to regaining full health for the future, per Charania's sources.

After finishing third in MVP voting last season, Leonard posted 16.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and two steals in limited action this year, last suiting up on Jan. 13. He's owed $20 million next year and could become an unrestricted free agent thereafter, though he's eligible for a max contract extension this offseason.

Other teams are expected to inquire about the two-time Defensive Player of the Year's availability this summer, including the Los Angeles Clippers, who are reportedly preparing a trade package.
